Entitlements

Entitlements specify which features, resources, and limits a customer is allowed to use.

What is Entitlements?

Entitlements are the capabilities and limits granted to a customer under a plan, add-on, trial, or other agreement. They connect the commercial package to actual product access. A SaaS application may use entitlements to decide whether an account can schedule reports, use an API, or create additional workspaces.

Example in SaaS

A Pro account is entitled to ten data connections and scheduled exports. A Business add-on enables centralized access administration. When the customer upgrades, billing and entitlement state change together according to the effective date. The interface explains what becomes available immediately and what remains subject to a quantity limit.

What to watch for

Entitlements describe what the account receives; user permissions describe who may exercise those capabilities. Both checks can be required. Avoid scattering plan-name comparisons throughout the code, which makes legacy packages and add-ons difficult to manage. Billing status changes, grace periods, downgrades, and trial endings all need explicit access behavior. Stripe documents entitlements as a feature-access layer associated with products.
