Billing Cycle

A billing cycle is the recurring service period used to determine subscription charges and renewal timing.

What is Billing Cycle?

A billing cycle is the repeated period associated with a subscription, such as one month or one year. Its anchor determines where periods start and end. The invoice date, service period, and payment due date can differ, especially when customers pay by invoice or are billed for usage after consumption.

Example in SaaS

A workspace renews each month on the 12th. Its base subscription is charged at the beginning of the service period, while usage overages can be calculated after the period ends. Another customer might have an annual commitment with a different payment schedule. The product must explain the schedule it actually uses.

What to watch for

A calendar month is not always equivalent to 30 days, and month-end anchors need consistent behavior for shorter months. Changing billing frequency may reset the period or create a partial-period adjustment. Preview the customer’s next invoice and renewal date during changes. Avoid conflating the commercial commitment term with how frequently money is collected.
