Subscription Billing

Subscription billing manages recurring charges, invoices, payment collection, and plan changes.

What is Subscription Billing?

Subscription billing is the system for charging customers repeatedly under an ongoing commercial agreement. It manages pricing, quantities, billing periods, invoices, payment methods, plan changes, and collection state. A subscription can combine fixed fees, seat charges, and measured usage depending on the offer.

Example in SaaS

A team subscribes to a $50 workspace plan plus $10 per additional editor. The billing system generates the invoice, attempts collection, records payment outcomes, and calculates adjustments when seats change. The application uses that information to apply its access policy while keeping customer-facing invoices and plan details understandable.

What to watch for

A subscription object, an invoice, a payment, and product access are separate concepts. An active-looking account can have an unpaid invoice, and a paid invoice may include one-off items unrelated to the recurring plan. Define transitions deliberately instead of treating every billing event as interchangeable. Reconcile asynchronous notifications and provide a clear customer path to change or cancel the subscription.
