Lead Qualification

Evaluating whether a potential customer fits the product and has a credible buying need.

Lead qualification determines whether a potential customer merits a particular commercial next step. It considers fit, the problem being solved, the stakeholders, decision process, constraints, and timing. Qualification should help both parties identify a useful opportunity rather than push every contact into a sales process.

Example: A logistics SaaS discovers that a prospect has the right shipment volume but needs an integration the product does not support. The salesperson explains the limitation before arranging a lengthy technical evaluation. Another account has the required workflow and an active project owner, so it proceeds.

Watch out: Do not treat qualification as asking a rigid script of budget questions before listening. A buyer may understand the problem well while still assembling a budget or decision group. Separate a genuine mismatch from missing information and temporary timing. Record the evidence, not just a yes/no label, and agree on disqualification reasons so marketing can improve targeting and product teams can recognize repeated gaps.
